V-Wars

I dropped it after 4 episodes. The plotting is slow and nothing much really happens. The monster cgi imposed over the mouths looks like monster cgi imposed over their mouths. It has a low budget B movie feel. Ian Somerhalder is soooo never going to get a non-vampire gig again. And there is the woman from Bitten in it as well, although a minor role. Once a werewolf always a monster. The homeland security people are annoying and there is no expansion of the infection shown, sure a couple other people get it, but they could have made it like an Outbreak pandemic, that would have been fun at least. Sad.

The Mandalorian

Like a lot of reviews I've seen so far online, the story of the Mandalorian is not exactly gripping. I feel I have to give it a high rating as it looks great, the Star Wars universe is great, the thing must have cost a fortune. But its all flash with very little substance. I am finding it hard to relate to the Mando, the fact that he never takes off the mask makes him more robotic-like than C-3PO. Although there is a lot of action, its boring action. The Jawas in episode two were a little too comical, and the egg thing at the end was stoopid. I find it interesting that Disney finds the killing of several Jawas completely acceptable for a show that will no doubt be watched by millions of kids. The Mando is more or less a paid assassin. I guess that is what the plus is for in Disney+. Fortunately I don't have to pay for it, as I don't think I would. Star Wars was a big deal in 1977, but its been kind of lame for at least 20 years. Now that Disney owns it, its just a matter of time before the Princess has big eyes like every other Disney barbie-female. I'm planning on watching it, as the graphics are great and its still at least as good as most current top rated shows. But I suspect I will downgrade the star rating the longer it goes on.

Nancy Drew

Its on the same level as Scooby Doo. The Nancy character is an ok character, the writers are definitely trying to give the story a dark twist, kind of like recent Sabrina show is much darker than anything that came before in that story world.

The idiotic cops are super annoying. And the way the writers are making the individual episodes a "Clue"-esque who-done-it mystery is such an old way to tell a mystery story that the writers better change it to a more modern approach or the show will get canceled.

Side topic: I'm pretty sure restaurant and pier setting is the same one used for The Secret Circle.

The best wine show ever produced. They are working on season 3 now. This show could easily run for a decade.

Kind of like Weird Tales or Tales from the Crypt, but poorly done.

The flip side of 'The Leftovers'. What happened to the people who disappeared, its not a spin off of that show but it might as well be. Throw in the mix, The Lord of the Flies and one psychopath just for drama.

Its was well written and the acting was good to very good considering they are all teenagers. Parts were slow and I skipped the obligatory gay sub story. But in general its a good show. The execution episode was gripping.

It's beyond terrible. Maybe a sexually confused 12 year old boy into people dressed like aliens might think its good.

This is a spin off of the Miss Fisher Murder Mystery show that has been on for a few years. The premise is that the now elder Miss Fisher is missing and presumed dead and her daughter has come of age and decides to take over the role of private detective.

The early 1960s setting is done extremely well, and the costumes and hair styles are spot on. The young Ms Fisher is the perfect actress and every scene is a gem. They simply could not have cast a more perfect actress.

The "club" of extraordinary woman, I will call it, is filled with strong female characters. The nerdy woman that sings in the second episode is amazing. They could have easily made the show about the club itself without Ms Fisher. The gadget man is an obvious homage to the James Bond "Q" character.

Let's hope it gets picked up as a series.

The Umbrella Academy

I liked it from the start, its very 'left of center' weird... The Addams Family meets The Royal Tenenbaums meets Pulp Fiction.

Although some of the people have superpowers, two of the bunch really don't... one is just a weird guy that thinks he is Batman with knives, and the other apparantly didn't have anything special about him until he was injected with Chimp serum. They never explain the origin of the powers, or explore the many many more people in the world that were supposedly born on the same day who also have powers.

The show holds up fairly well over the course of season 1, I knocked it down to 3.5 stars due to lots of boring dialog and for being somewhat predictable. It was obvious that the Vanya character had powers and they were being repressed by the pills. Its an old trick from mystery novels, you ignore a character and in the end we find out they were the one who did it.

I'll watch season 2 and I suspect there will be a season 3 as well since there is a third graphic novel coming out soon. It does have a lot of gratuitous vilolence, and is no doubt teaching the youth to solve problems by killing people. People are constantly killed with no regard whatsoever.

I dislike Ellen Page taking a job from a hetero-sexual actress. You can't complain about straight people playing homosexuals and then allow a homosexual to play a straight person. What if it was a white person playing a black person? Just watch the news to see how well that works out. I know its gone the other way for a very long time with heteros playing homos on screen, but that doesn't make it right to go the other way. It isn't helping the homosexual cause to pretend to be straight for a tv role. And Ellen being so vocal about her sexual orentation and bias in hollywood kind of ruins the show a little when she doesn't play a homosexual. I don't want to know I'm watching Ellen Page, I want to be watching the character, but her real life persona is larger than her acting ability. She has never been more than a B level actor. I do like seeing her act, but that barely makes up for what I call The 'Look At Me, Look At Me' Effect.
