The first show was quite fun, especially the iambic pentameter scene. I expect it to drop off quickly into soap opera melodrama, but you take it where you can get it.
I caveat that with this strange repetitive dialog bent that happened a couple times in the episode, like the writer couldn't think what to say so they had the Will character repeat the line incessantly.
**EDIT** I've finished the season now, it was a well written season and the weaving in of the writing of the famous plays was done incredibly well. Having said that, I doubt it will find an audience, as its fairly intellectual and the language and concepts are complex. Much like reading a Shakespeare play today is difficult to comprehend without training. Its simply too smart for its own good. I doubt there will be a second season.
The religiosity is of course appalling, but it is likely accurate to the mores of the day.
If magic were real, these are the last two guys you would want messing around with it. The two make up a kind of comedy of errors duo stumbling their way into the power otherworldly realms in the same manner that an actual scientist might serendipitously discover nuclear radiation by realizing they are glowing.
Its quite a fun ride and I was disappointed it was canceled, as there are several books apparently and it could have run for a couple seasons.
I watched the first season, but it is a dark plot and I dropped it because I just don't need that much negativity in my TV watching life. Its an excellent show, and I'm sure a modern cult could behave this way.
The first season was an F'ing blast. The characters are fully F'ing developed from the get go like its an F'ing novel turned into a TV series. The two leads are F'ing amazing and very atypical for both the stars. Azaria plays his role like he has been waiting his whole life for this part. The parts with the wife story is LOL funny. And the emotional journey or lack there of is good as well.
Season 2 is good as well, though its starts loosing its way. Trying too hard to be sensationalistic.
Season 3 sucks so far. Whose idea was it for the character to get sober? Its a show about a drunk. I think it would be hard for this to get a 4th season.
I just re-watched this series a couple weeks ago because I remembered how good it was. Its by the same author that did the Vampire Diary's, but it was a better show in certain ways. Less hero-hair if you know what I mean.
The 4 main girls/young women are amazing, and they all of them went on to great things since. And then there is the guy that played John Conner in the Sarah Conner Chronicles who has apparently discovered the fountain of youth. I was really rooting for another season at least as I guess there are several books in the series, but I suspect the cast all had other bookings and a couple of them (especially the young and restless one) probably got pressure to get off the "witch" show.
The episodes are well written as you would expect from a novel-based show and the production values are high. If you like magical imaginary worlds, then this is the show for you.
Spoiler: Crystals don't have any powers... new agey people are children playing make believe in adult bodies.
This version of Dirk Gently is true to Adams' books. The BBC didn't give the show the support it needed and the episodes became less poignant as the erratic "seasons" were released. The first story over several episodes was wonderful, but the series goes down hill from there... but if you know anything about Adams, then you know he was a slacker and the books often meandered aimlessly searching for a plot. It is perhaps the best TV version of any of his works though and I quite enjoyed it.
I remember watching this but the plot is vague and about two nerdy girls trying to fit in with the cool kids... it did a fairly good job showing that being square was cool. The highlight was DEVO doing That's Good on the show... one of my all time fav bands at the time and to this day. There are a few clips on You Tube, it was a popular show at the time. But looking at it now it is so fatuous and '80s. Guys with rat tails, LOL.... ok, I had one. I was the square peg.
A great first season. The main actress was far better than I had thought she would be having seen her on Louie which I didn't care for at all (Louie produces this show I think)... you get sucked into the reality of her life as if you are a neighbor actually watching someone live their mundane yet tragically fascinating life... the show has some seriously beautiful real moments that deserve awards. Looking forward to season 2.
I watched this when I was a little kid, I remember it but its slightly hazzy as I was young. I do remember it fondly though, the way people think the past was great and a golden era.
I found it online a couple years ago to see what I thought of it as an adult... it was surprisingly adult in its plot and subject matter. I bet it went over my head when I was a kid. It is also very trippy in the way the story is told which is most likely due to the writers doing drugs. I could see it making a cult comeback for a younger generation when the drug revolution blossoms as it appears to be gearing up for with the legalization of pot and the free availability of other drugs online. I guess I drifted off the show there a bit.
Witchypoo !!!!!
I avoided this show for a few years despite the young gorgeous blonde because it was so trendy, kind of the new Nerdy Friends. I was bored at one point and marathoned the first three seasons... but then stopped watching it again as I could see it was repeating itself every other season already. They get together, they break up, they get together, they break up....
I recently started watching it again when it hit season 10, my thinking was that it was going to be the last season. Plus the now slightly aged blonde lost some weight and is looking more attractive again (just being honest, I'm a typical guy). I was kind of annoyed that they are doing two more seasons and probably won't watch it again until perhaps the last episode.
Its like eating cotton candy, its fun for five minutes and then you realize you are still hungry because there was no substance to fill you up. I gave it 2.5 stars because it is funny at times in its perpetual sophomoric mindset. And you can always look at the blonde if its boring.
