THE INNOCENT - SEASON ONE
The series does go on too long, making it necessary to revisit things in order to keep up with the bevy of details that keep emerging. But The Innocent isn't meant to be easy viewing. Engage with it as fully as you can - and enjoy The Innocent's wild, wild ride.
UTOPIA - SEASON ONE
At one point, David Fincher was all over this adaptation before leaving over budget concerns. I think if he had stayed on, it would have done the UK version justice but the show struggled to outdo the UK’s cult series. Fanx everyone had high expectations but I don't think Utopia’s unadulterated mayhem is replicable – attempting to do so without the genius composer Alex Garcia Lopez and screenwriters is a lost cause.
THE FLATSHARE - SEASON ONE
I should hate it, and I sort of do, and yet I also don’t, which I appreciate is confusing when it comes to a review. In truth, I can’t stop watching it... It's daft, but enjoyable if you're willing to surrender to the genre's cliches and charismatic lead performances that are in on the joke.
THE PERFECT MOTHER - SEASON ONE
The Perfect Mother is too aimless to keep our attention and loaded with so many typical lazy turns, I am surprised I lasted all four eps.
THE CRY - SEASON ONE
It's not bad enough for me to get worked up about its ineptitude, but its creative laziness and unapologetically derivative trappings make it impossible to endorse.
YOU DON'T KNOW ME - SEASON ONE
The well-written, skillfully told four-part crime series offers an engaging narrative that never quite ends. I've awarded it four stars because the conceit is different and makes you think -- can someone be morally in the right while legally in the wrong? -- and the performances were all so strong.
KEEP BREATHING - SEASON ONE
I mildly-enjoyed this limited series which I would describe as psychological rather than survivalist. We spend at least as much time in the protagonist’s (Liv) head through flashbacks, hallucinations, and dreams as we do following her through the woods. Eventually, it becomes hard to distinguish real events from false memories and hallucinations as Liv’s internal and external obstacles merge into one conflict: whether or not she is willing to try at life in the face of fear and uncertainty.
What I loved about the series, is the cinematography and overall production design as it was really beautiful. If you are looking for a gritty, plot-driven survival story where the main character has realistic outdoor skills, this is probably not the show for you. Instead, this series is a character-driven story that uses being alone in the wilderness to explore the protagonist’s psychological state.
It isn't a show I would watch again but also isn't a show I would deter others from watching either.
FREERIDGE - SEASON ONE
Everything about this series showed so much promise. Promising actors. Promising storyline. Promising premise to have spun-off from "On My Block" but it, unfortunately, tanked. Unfunny and highly unrecommended.
THE MISSING - SEASON TWO
If Season One doesn't float your boat, start with Season Two. It does an excellent job of making its many, many twists feel like natural reveals, and it moves along at a quick pace while leaving enough time to explore the difficult and complicated emotions of its leads.
SUITS - SEASON ONE
It's popcorn TV well worth settling in to watch. There's hardly a weak link in the chain. Suits seems perfectly tailored to make its characters all look watchable.
